Hey! This better be working, because like I asked that woman... What is going on?!

[So sorry for the sudden yelling, Johto. There's one angry girl on the line, hiding her confusion behind, well. The volume.]

Yes yes, it's nice to be back in some place with some sense of reality...

[As she quiets down a soft, constant “Pip! Pip! Pip!” can be heard in the background, unheard or unacknowledged by the girl talking.]

But, I was supposed to be inside a shrine, not running around some quaint little town with animals as weird as Mokona! It's probably that thing's fault to begin with. When I find that marshmallow-

[She's mumbling to herself now, making the background cries all the more noticeable. Enough that the caller snaps at the source.]

Would you quit doing that?! I don't know what you want!!

[One last “Pip!” and out goes the call. Please allow five seconds for ears to stop ringing.]

Hikaru! Finally!

[She's turning that screen back on in a snap, beaming at the fellow night- while she holds that blue penguin off her leg and out of sight with her free hand.]

Well of course I'm... What do you mean, back? Back in your sight? Back in contact? Oh, what's it matter! How did we, end up...

[....so sorry. She just noticed. Cyndaquil.

I meant back in Johto. You were here before. Fuu, too. [ Though Hikaru didn't know them very well at the time. ] You don't remember?

[ Which is a saddening thought, but that's okay. Even if Umi doesn't remember, she's here and Hikaru will do everything she can to help her friend. They can make new memories together in this world, too! That thought alone is enough to bring the smile back to her face. ]

That? [ And she turns her eyes briefly to the Cyndaquil hanging off her shoulder. ] That's Mokona, my starter Pokémon! You should've gotten one when you showed up in New Bark Town, too. They're good friends and really important on your journey here. Which one did you get, Umi-chan?

Don't I- Hikaru, you aren't making sense! The last I remember is Mokona nose diving us into an ocean and coming up on something underwater, and...

[And, not much, after that. There might have been a dragon, but she's half-certain that was just a dream before she woke up here. And it doesn't right now. She's in a strange world, again. Hikaru's here, but who knows where and acting like this is not insane.

And she's named a fiery... Mousy thing after that.]

Why would you... You know what? Scratch that. Why are you talking like what the people here coughed up as a story makes sense? What about Cefiro?!

[-wow, never expected herself to point that out.

And, well, she did ask, so she will give a wordless tilt of the feed, so Hikaru can see the Piplup all but climbing up her leg. Until she finally gets some attention- Then she freezes like her fin's caught in the cookie jar.]

[ Oh. Oh. Umi came to Johto from that far long ago? It's surprising despite that Hikaru knew, knows very well that that's more than possible. She herself was pulled to Johto for the first before they even touched down on Fyula. ]

I know this is all probably really strange to you and this is probably going to sound really hard to believe, but Cefiro will be okay. When you're brought to this world, time is frozen for you until you're sent back. The story the people in New Bark Town told you is true, too.

[ And Mokona the Cyndaquil is nodding vigorously even as he peers at Umi. ]

-exactly!

[Finally, a sense of reality returning!

But. It's certainly not lasting... And if it were anyone else claiming these things, there would be nothing to say but "you're off your rocker" or "that's insane" or "that's not the point- I want to get back!"

But it's Hikaru, so instead it's just a light] You've got to be kidding! [Before she shakes off the shock enough to answer properly, moving only to sit on the grass - and right into her Piplup's grabby range.]

So who's "will" do we have to thank for this one?

I'm not kidding, Umi-chan. I'm serious.

[ And she pauses at Umi's question, offering Mokona a light pat on the head as she contemplates her answer. Whose will indeed. ]

As for whose 'will' we have to thank for being here, nobody really knows. Whoever it is is must be really strong, though. People from all kinds of different worlds are brought to Johto. It's not just us this time.

[Yes, she is... And this is Hikaru, so she wouldn't be lying, either.

But, even with an experience of magic behind her now, this is pretty big to swallow, and she struggles to even as Hikaru drops another surprise in her lap.]

Then... what is this? Some gigantic black hole of worlds sucking us in to babysit strange animals???

[-someone just jabbed her in the leg for that one. One guess who.]

[ And that someone will be receiving a 'hey' in PokéSpeak from Mokona alongside a 'look up here'. Clearly it's okay to talk over their trainers. ]

I wish I knew. All I know is that everyone who comes to Johto is given a Pokémon partner. We're supposed to catch more Pokémon, train them, and take really good care of them. They're important friends and we rely on them for protection while we're here. People battle with them regularly for fun or sport and there's a gym challenge, too!

[Then have a "-gasp!" right back, Mokona, followed by some nice, fast chatter of how Umi's supposed to be going with her and working with her but keeps ignoring her and won't go look for wilds to fight-

Meanwhile.]

How do you know when you're done?? Even with a goal now we can't stay looking after the things forever!

[ Fast? Fast is good in Mokona's book and he nods once, twice, three times before making a face. Your trainer is ignoring you? Have you tried climbing all over her? Because he does it all the time and it works perfect! ]

That's how it seems. I don't think anybody knows really when they're done. People are sent home all the time before they can finish the gym challenge and Breeders don't even have to do that. It doesn't really make sense.

So there's no clue what causes it?

[Because if she has to brainstorm possibilities and experiment.

Also, what is that new Mokona saying? It's making Piplup try climbing even more!]

[ And give Hikaru a moment to tilt her head at Umi on the screen. She lifts her hands just in time to catch her Cyndaquil. They both peer at the screen. ]

Um, I think he wants your attention, Umi-chan.

-it's been wanting my attention all day!

[And now for a dance of "how to get a ~~monkey~~ penguin off my back".]

[ O-oh, that dance is... ]

Maybe you should talk to him, then. He's your partner and you're going to be working together from now on, so it's important to get off to a good start! Maybe he wants something?
